ETOBICOKE – Humber men's volleyball (4-3, 6th West) snapped back into the win column with a sweep (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) over the No. 7 Fanshawe Falcons (7-2, 1st West) on Thursday evening at the Hawks' Nest.
Before the first serve, the Hawks' Nest rose to its feet as Humber honoured former longtime sports information director Jim Bialek with a banner raising.
Bialek, who retired in 2019 after a 40-year career at Humber, is the longest-serving member in the athletics department's history. He guided Humber's transition into the digital era and played a pivotal role in building the Hawks Sports Network into the most extensive streaming platform in the CCAA.
A true Humber legend, Bialek's dedication, leadership and heart will now hang in the rafters of the Nest forever.
Match recap
Sitting on a fine line in the sixth place in the West Division, the Hawks came into the match needing momentum after a comeback loss to Mohawk. A push toward the top three was still within reach, but Humber needed to shift gears quickly. Standing in their way was a red-hot Fanshawe squad leading the division with a 7-1 record.
The top-ranked Falcons came out of the gates hot, stunning the Hawks' Nest with an early 8-4 lead. Head coach Wayne Wilkins stopped the run with a timeout, and Humber returned to the court with renewed energy, flipping the momentum to surge ahead 15-10. Rookie middle blocker Dante Sugarman anchored the net and was instrumental in the turnaround. With their defence settled and their rhythm restored, the Hawks closed out the first set 25-18
Humber found itself battling from behind again in the second set, as the Falcons opened with a 6-1 and applied pressure on the home team. But once more, Wilkins' team show it thrives under pressure. After trailing for most of the set, the Hawks took the lead at 18-17, with Teyven Blackmore and Paul Manna steering the offence. From there, Humber closed confidently with a 25-19 set win.
In what could have been the match's final set, the Hawks flipped the script and struck first, taking an early lead for the first time all night. Humber diversified plays, with Enzo Endres soaring on one side and Manna delivering from the opposite. The Hawks held on to the lead and captured the sweep 25-22.
Teyven Blackmore was named the Player of the Match.
