ETOBICOKE – Humber men's volleyball (11-5, 2nd West) closed out its regular season schedule with an upset victory (25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25) over the No. 8 Cambrian Golden Shield (13-3, 1st West) on Sunday afternoon at the Hawks' Nest.
The Hawks honoured their graduating seniors Alex Segui, Kyle-Gray-Phillips and Teyven Blackmore, who are leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence, consistency and championship success.
Match recap
It was an afternoon of celebration as three Humber seniors said goodbye to the Hawks' Nest. Still, coach Wayne Wilkins' team knew the stakes were higher. A win over the top team in the West Division Cambrian Golden Shield could provide crucial momentum heading into the postseason.
That energy showed early in the opening set, as the Hawks came out firing and jumped to an 8-3 lead. Cambrian narrowed the gap, trimming the deficit to 22-19, but Enzo Endres delivered the finishing point to capture a 25-19 first-set win.
The fans in the crowd watched a much more contested second set, with neither side able to establish separation. The score remained deadlocked at 18-18 before late attacking errors by Humber allowed the Golden Shield to even the match with a 25-22 victory.
The Hawks regained control in the third set after an early back-and-forth exchange. Endres continued to attack from both pins, recording 19 kills mid third set, while teaming up with Justin Holland for two key double blocks. The Hawks closed out a 25-18 win to take a 2-1 lead.
Cambrian pushed early in the fourth set in an effort to force a deciding fifth, but Humber settled in midway through. Paul Manna, who had been serving lasers all match, delivered another clutch point to force a Cambrian timeout at 20-16. The Golden Shield rallied to force a 24-24 tie, but none other than Endres sealed the match with a 27-25 kill.
