ETOBICOKE – Another statement from the nation's top-ranked team — now make it 30-for-30. No. 1 Humber women's volleyball (5-0, 1st West) extended its perfect record against the Conestoga Condors (4-2, 3rd West), securing a thrilling five-set win (20-25, 25-13, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13) Wednesday evening at the Hawks' Nest.
In 30 meetings against the Condors, the Hawks have never lost, dropping only 10 sets. Senior player Hannah Manners led the Hawks offensively, scoring a career-high 27 points, which included 22 kills.
Match recap
Before hitting the road for a two-game stretch, the Hawks hosted the Conestoga Condors. A win here would not only keep Humber's place atop the West Division standings but also extend its perfect record against Conestoga to 30 wins.
Behind long rallies and attacking errors from the Hawks, Conestoga jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, forcing head coach Chris Wilkins to call a timeout to regroup his squad. Humber managed to trim the deficit to three points several times through the set, but errors continued to hurt them and allowed Conestoga to take the first set 25-20.
The second set told a different story. The Hawks quickly settled in, shook off their early jitters, and never looked back. Humber dominated the frame with a 25-13 performance, handing Conestoga its worst set loss of the year.
The crowd was on edge in the third set, with neither team giving an inch in a 13-13 deadlock. Senior players Amy Connelly and Hannah Manners combined for eight points to fuel Humber's attack. Manners came through again in the late stages, scoring crucial points to power Humber to a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead.
The Condors showed they had plenty of energy left in the tank in the fourth set, taking control at the net while the Hawks struggled to find consistency in their setting. In what felt like a flash, Conestoga built a 22-15 lead. Humber went on a 4-0 run to apply pressure, but a Condors' timeout ended their momentum, capturing a 25-20 win to send the match to the fifth set.
The Hawks got off to a strong start in the decisive fifth set, once again riding the hot hands of Connelly and Manners to build an early edge. But the Condors refused to give up, clawing back to level the score at 12-12.
A clutch point from Manners down the end line and a double block by Lexi Sabo and Connelly set up match point at 14-13. Caitlyn Labelle then sealed the deal with the winning kill for a 15-13 Humber victory.
Hannah Manners and Tayah Wilkins were both named Players of the Game.
