ETOBICOKE – Top-ranked Humber men's basketball (7-0, 1st West), against the No. 7 Mohawk Mountaineers (7-1, 2nd West) 95-85, on Wednesday evening at the Humber Athletics Centre. Malik Grant was perfect at the free-throw line while racking up 24 points on the night. Dwayne Burke also stood out for the Hawks, putting 16 points to his name.

Game Recap

Right from tip off both sides didn't leave much breathing room for one another, until they settled to tie the score up at ten halfway through the first. Malik Grant led the way for the Hawks in that time frame with six to his name. As time wound down both sides fought for some points on the board, eventually tying it up again at 16.

With 56 seconds remaining, Grant continued to be the star of the show making back-to-back shots from downtown, to put the home team ahead by six. The Brampton native leads Humber and ranks third in the conference with a 55.6 three-point percentage. After ten Humber took a six-point lead with a score of 22-16.

Into the next frame, Nathan Waithe started out red-hot, bucketing a three-pointer with 8:28 on the clock. Mohawk on the other hand began with several substitutions and missed opportunities. Even though they slowly but surely gained more points, the Hawks powered forward, eventually climbing to a six-point lead of 29-23, at the halfway point.

As time dwindled away, the Mountaineers decreased their opponents lead to two with less than three to go. Austin Jackson, three-pointer, forcing Mohawk to call a time out. As time drained from the clock, Adrian Aluyi had the home team's last big chance of the quarter. He scored two and drained another at the charity line, putting the Hawks up by six with a score of 43-37 at the half. The Toronto, Ont. native leads Humber with a 51.9 FG percentage, 1.9 points ahead of Benni Kazadi.

Despite the low score, the home team continued to dominate the court at the start of the third. Humber constantly knocked down every chance the visiting team got to score points in the first three minutes of play, while they went up by six in that same time frame. Kwabena Antwi was the star of this quarter, making three layups and one shot from the arc, forcing Mohawk's head coach Jamie Girolametto to call a time out with 4:13 on the clock. However, it wouldn't do much to stop the unstoppable Humber Hawks, who worked together to increase their lead to 12 by the end of the third.

In last quarter, the Hawks continued to hold back the Mountaineers, creating many chances to go ahead by nine with 4:05 left on the clock. As time wound down Mohawk put in great effort to try and catch up, but Malik Grant, Benni Kazadi and Dwayne "DJ" Burke shone this time around, gathering 20 points altogether in that quarter alone. Unfortunately, near the end, their teammate Adrian Aluyi got charged with his fifth foul of the night, sending him out of the game with not much time left. But that didn't damper the mood of the rest of his squad, who executed on many chances to win the game 95-85 and send Mohawk packing.

Dwayne Burke earned Player of the Game for his contributions that resulted in a win.
