NANAIMO, B.C. - Wednesday evening, the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) announced that Malik Grant was named the national player of the year - the first in program history. Grant's selection marks a defining moment not just in his career, but in the history of Humber basketball. For a program widely recognized as the most decorated in the country—built on championships, All-Canadians, and sustained excellence—this honour represents a new benchmark, one that had remained just out of reach despite decades of dominance. Grant's achievement elevates the legacy of Humber basketball, proving that even within a culture of winning, there are still milestones that redefine greatness.
The fifth-year power forward from the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Grant continued to build on an already remarkable collegiate career with another dominant season. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 18.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game across 15 appearances, while shooting 47.3 per cent from the field, 38.4 per cent from three-point range, and 80.6 per cent from the free throw line. Grant led the Hawks in scoring, three-point percentage, and assists, finishing third in the OCAA West Division in scoring while guiding Humber to a 15–3 league record and a second-place finish in the division.
Since joining the Hawks in 2023, Grant has helped lead Humber to the provincial and national podium each season, highlighted by a CCAA national championship in 2025, where he was named Championship MVP. His impact on the program has been historic, as he now stands as the highest three-year scorer in Humber men's basketball history.
"Malik Grant is one of the most complete players to ever represent Humber — a forward who impacts the game in every way," said Humber Hawks head coach Omar Miles. "His versatility, competitiveness, and ability to elevate those around him make him not only special but one of the very best players in the country."
Grant's influence extends beyond his on-court accomplishments. Known for his professionalism, work ethic, and leadership, he consistently sets the standard for his teammates through preparation and composure under pressure. His team-first mentality and commitment to fair play have made him a respected leader within the Humber program.
In April 2025, Grant made history by becoming one of the first CCAA players drafted into the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) and the first to appear in a game, further highlighting the growing impact of CCAA athletes at the professional level.
Off the court, Grant has contributed to the development of the sport by volunteering at youth basketball camps hosted by Humber College. Through these camps, he helps teach the fundamentals of the game while promoting teamwork, work ethic, and sportsmanship to young athletes.
With his elite production, leadership, and dedication to the sport, Grant has firmly established himself as one of the premier players in CCAA men's basketball.
