2020 Humber Varsity Awards: Team MVP

ETOBICOKE – The Humber Varsity Most Valuable Player Award is presented to the student-athletes who are deemed by the coaches and their teammates to have the greatest positive impact on their team both on and off the field of play, and who, without their contributions, the team as a whole would not have attained its overall success.

Winter Season Team Most Valuable Player
Badminton
Chloe Rowe –
Chloe Rowe’s dominant run continued this season, winning the 2020 CCAA Women’s Doubles national championship with partner Susanna Quach. The duo ran the table on the biggest stage, finishing 7-0 while outscoring their opponents, 294-140. Rowe became the first female student-athlete in Humber history to win four straight national titles and has now been named team MVP for three straight seasons.

Curling
Kaitlyn Jones –
When skip Kaitlyn Jones joined the Humber curling program, she brought her high-profile resume to the blue and gold. The 2018 World Junior Curling Champion skipped the women’s team to a perfect record at provincials, earning tournament MVP honours. Jones and the Hawks went on to win a silver medal at nationals in Manitoba.

Zack Shurtleff – Two-sport athlete Zack Shurtleff skipped the men’s curling team to a CCAA silver medal. After helping the rugby team win a bronze medal, Zack hit the ice to lead men’s curling to a perfect record at provincials to win the program’s third OCAA title, earning tournament MVP.

Basketball
Jahnae Gyles –
Senior Jahnae Gyles was named a second-team all-star for the second straight season, helping the women’s basketball program capture the OCAA bronze medal. The Mississauga native moved into fifth all-time in scoring for Humber, finishing with a career-high 259 points.  

Jaylan Morgan – Mr. 300 dominated the OCAA circuit in his final season with Humber, helping the Hawks clinch the program’s second straight division title and 37th consecutive postseason berth. Morgan’s 357 points were the fifth most in program history and he became just the third player for Humber basketball to score 40-plus points in a game.

Indoor Soccer
Catarina Medeiros –
A true freshman, Medeiros parlayed her outdoor experience into a dominant performance on the indoor pitch. The Brampton native recorded four tallies at regionals, adding three more points at provincials before the tournament was cut short. The future of the women’s soccer team is bright with Medeiros in the lineup.

Nicholas Frenati – After being named a championship all-star during the Fall season, third-year keeper Nicholas Frenati continued to be solid between the pipes for Humber soccer. Before the indoor championship was cancelled, the Bolton native recorded three wins in round-robin play – including two clean sheets.

Volleyball
Alex Bartmann –
A two-time league all-star, setter Alex Bartmann helped Humber volleyball return to the OCAA podium, winning the silver medal and earning all-tournament honours. The Uxbridge native recorded a program-record 481 assists this year and through three seasons has recorded 1,093 dimes – a program-record.

Jake Gomes –
Named the 2020 OCAA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year, Jake Gomes helped the Hawks return to the national championship match for just the second time in program history – capturing the silver medal. Gomes was named the eighth All-Canadian in team history and was selected as the championship MVP when Humber won its first OCAA title since 2012.

Fall Season Most Valuable Player
Baseball
Liam Sutherland –
In his final season with Humber baseball, outfielder Liam Sutherland was named a league all-star for the third straight season. The 2017 Player of the Year finished second in the league in hitting, finishing with a career-high .424 batting average. Sutherland and the Hawks successfully defended their provincial title, defeating Durham 9-2 in the OCAA Finals.

Cross Country
Mike Matthews –
In his first season with Humber cross country, Mike Matthews helped the Hawks finish on the podium at the Seneca Invitational and a fourth-place finish at provincials. Matthews was also named to the OCAA All-Academic team.
Megan Raso – In five league races this season, Megan Raso finished as a top-20 racer in each event. The first-year runner was also named to the OCAA All-Academic team.

Golf
Conner Watt –
Senior Conner Watt helped the Hawks capture its third straight provincial title, firing a two-over par to capture the individual silver medal. Watt received All-Canadian honours for the second time and has now been named the MVP of the golf team for the second straight year.

Cameron Griffin – A two-time provincial champion, Cameron Griffin led the Hawks to a CCAA bronze medal in Quebec. The second-year Burlington native led Humber on its final push up the standings, shooting even-par on the final day.

Haley McCallum – Second-year golfer Hayley McCallum dominated the OCAA circuit, capturing Humber’s first individual title since 2014. The Mississauga native was named a CCAA All-Canadian for the second straight year and helped the Hawks win a CCAA bronze medal in Quebec.

Rugby
Zack Shurtleff –
As soon as two-sport athlete Zack Shurtleff rejoined the rugby squad; the Hawks went on to win four of their next six games. In the bronze medal game, Shurtleff finished with 16 points and was named the man of the match.

Rugby Sevens
Cheyenne De Luca –
For the third-straight season, Cheyenne De Luca was named an OCAA League All-Star. The Toronto native became the first player in league history to win the OCAA scoring title twice, and her 31 tries broke Michaela Knowles' OCAA record of 26 from 2016. De Luca has now been named team MVP in back-to-back seasons.

Christina Branch – Senior Christina Branch became the first player in program history to be named the OCAA Player of the Year and concludes her prestigious career as the OCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 537 points. Branch has now been named a team MVP for the third time.

Soccer
Nicholas Machado –
Arguably the most underrated player in the OCAA, centre-mid Nicholas Machado played an integral role in helping Humber soccer successfully defend its provincial title. His composure and leadership from the middle of the pitch led to Machado being named the 2019 OCAA Championship MVP.
Remi Pelletier –
A staple on Humber’s top-defensive line for three seasons, Remi Pelletier has become a leader on the women’s soccer program. In all three-years, Remi and the Hawks have captured three OCAA medals.

Softball
Presly Buchanan –
Presly joined the Hawks and completely changed the program’s landscape, helping Humber softball capture its first provincial title since 2013. After being named the first OCAA Pitcher of the Year in program history, Presly went on to be selected as the 2019 OCAA Championship MVP.
