Batpie joins 700-point club in win over Lambton

ETOBICOKE – No. 14 Humber women's basketball (10-2, 2nd West) won their fifth straight game 69-59 against the Lambton Lions (4-8, 6th West) at home on Saturday. Sarah Baptie led the way with 24 points and six steals. Eremwon Destiny also stood out for the Hawks, recording 13 points and four rebounds.

Game Recap

Right from tip-off, Humber wasted no time to get on the board, recording five points in the first three minutes.

That forced Lambton's head coach Janine Day to call an unusually early timeout with 7:18 left on the clock. Fortunately, the Lions regrouped using their size to their advantage, making it difficult for Humber to score from the inside; something that is key for their game.

Nevertheless, the Hawks powered forward to score seven more as they entered the back half with the help of Sarah Baptie. Baptie, who polished off the quarter with a shot from downtown, led the Hawks with ten points by the end of the first.

After ten, Humber had a five-point advantage over the Lions, leading 21-16.

The tight contest continued in the second despite Lambton's efforts to capitalize on their offensive end to try to get a lead. In the first five minutes the Lions slowly climbed back within five, forcing Humber's head coach Ceejay Nofuente to call a timeout with 5:39 on the clock.

However, even with the timeout the Hawks defence cooled off considerably in the back half, despite keeping the lead. That would give space for Lambton's Maddy Bishop to show off her skills from the arc, giving her squad their first lead of the game, 32-30 with time winding down. Bishop accumulated nine points by the end of the half, with all of them coming from the three-point line.

Fortunately, Humber didn't look deterred by the Lions' comeback, as Sarah Baptie, Eremwon Destiny and Persia Martin-Brown got the edge over Lambton with a layup each.

By the end of the first half the Hawks led the Lions by a single point, 36-35.

After the break, it was a relatively slow start for Lambton, who lost out on the opportunity for more points because of turnovers and several missed chances. In the first five minutes, Humber's Persia Martin-Brown, Carina Wynter-Josephs, and Marley Bonnick worked together to bring the score to 45-42, outscoring the Lions 9-7.

Moments later, Sarah Baptie flew down the court for her first points of the quarter to bring her point total to 12, and Wynter-Josephs came back for more, igniting some life into the crowd.

With ten minutes left, the Hawks remained ahead by seven, 53-46.

In the last ten minutes, Humber did what they had to do to finish the night with a victory. Until the end they relied on the top-notch offence of their top scorers Baptie, Destiny and Bonnick to scare Lambton away.

At the buzzer the Hawks would go onto win 69-59, outscoring the Lions by one possession.

Marley Bonnick was named Player of the Game due to her many contributions that resulted in a win for Humber.
