ETOBICOKE – Humber women's basketball (5-1, 2nd West) fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-0, 1st West) 75-60, on Wednesday evening at the Humber Athletics Centre. Beverly Omere led the way with 14 points for the Hawks. Sarah Baptie recorded nine points, two steals and three assists.
The team also honoured missing and murdered Indigenous women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+) by wearing red and black Indigenous-themed jerseys during the match. The themed night also featured a speech by Humber's Vice President of Inclusion, Belonging and Student Experience, Jason Seright, and a drumming ceremony during halftime.
Game Recap
Right from tip-off, the Hawks started strong on the offensive end as Beverly Omere got the first few points on the board for her squad, with an easy layup assisted by Sarah Baptie. Soon after that Marian Martin followed up with a shot from the arc with 7:43 left to tie it up at five apiece. Mohawk also put up a fight on the other end of the court, racking up enough points to eventually take a 15-7 lead halfway through the quarter.
Over time, both teams would fight at their respective offensive ends before Martin came in clutch again, making a layup with 0:27 left on the clock. However, Mohawk's Rachel Guanzon capped off the quarter with a shot of her own to hand her team the advantage at the buzzer.
In the next frame, Mohawk dominated, securing ten points in the first five minutes of the quarter. The Hawks, on the other hand, couldn't scrounge up much in that time, with their only points coming from two free throws by Saleah Joseph. The Mississauga native holds the third spot in Humber with a 35.7 FG percentage.
Humber called a timeout with 6:02 left in the quarter, which improved their play a bit, but not enough to prevent their opponents from scoring more. With five minutes remaining, the Mountaineers would go on to score another 12 points by the end of the quarter, whereas the Hawks on the other hand, were able to score 13, but still came up short. At halftime, Mohawk would come out on top once again with a lead of 35-29.
After the break, Humber seemed to have found their rhythm for the first few minutes, with Beverly Omere coming in hot to cut her squad's lead to three. Even though they improved slightly, their chemistry on the court wouldn't last much longer, as the Mountaineers continued to climb their way up the ladder for more points. In the end, the Hawks, who hadn't taken the lead throughout the entire game so far, finished the quarter down by five, 55-50.
In the last quarter, Mohawk controlled the court once again, only allowing Humber to score three points within the first five minutes. This forced head coach Ceejay Nofuente to call a timeout, hoping to inject some life into her team. That timeout wouldn't do anything but give the home team seven points at the final buzzer. Although they made some decent effort, the Mountaineers were the ones who took the W this time around with a 75-60 victory to end the night.
