ETOBICOKE – No. 9 Humber women's basketball (4-0, 1st West) dominated the Sheridan Bruins (1-3, 8th West) with a 73-39 win on Wednesday night. Marian Martin and Sarah Baptie led the Hawks with 10 and 11 points each. Eremwon Destiny recorded eight of Humber's 31 defensive rebounds.
Game Recap
Right from tip-off, Humber started strong on its defensive end, but the same couldn't be said for their offence. Marian Martin got the Hawks rolling, scoring the first three points for her squad with a layup and a free throw. Otherwise, it was a low-scoring first quarter with neither team reaching double-digits until the final minutes. For Humber, this play came from Marian Martin once again, who set the ball in motion from the arc, after an assist from the inside the paint by Sarah Baptie.
In the last two minutes, both sides would take possession to rack up some points for their sides. However, Sheridan's Kiara Griffith helped uplift her team to cut the Hawks' lead to four with a score of 17-13, after the first ten minutes.
Into the next frame, Humber took an early nine-point lead and continued to rack up more. On the other side of the court, the Bruins still couldn't seem to find a rhythm that worked, forcing a timeout call. After Sheridan regrouped, the ladies in double blue finally seemed to have mustered up some energy, as Jahzara Brown-Francis scored the Bruins' first bucket of the quarter with 7:08 left to play.
As the clock wound down, the Hawks created a couple more chances to put themselves ahead. In the final seconds of the third, Sarah Baptie forced a long chest pass to Saleah Joseph for the finish at the buzzer. Humber exited the half up by a dozen, 36-24.
After the break, the strong defence turned into strong offence for the Hawks. Marian Martin came in clutch for a second time with a three from the tip of the arc. Whereas Sheridan, who had 27 turnovers in the game, scored only five points by the halfway mark of the quarter. From that point on, play shifted back and forth with the Bruins creating some great chances, but despite their best efforts, the execution just wasn't there.
Now with 2:12 left on the clock, Sheridan called a timeout to regroup once more. Surprisingly, they would get two points from that timeout, shortening Humber's lead to 19. But Baptie would provide an answer for the Hawks, launching a shot from downtown to enter the third, 54-32.
In the fourth good effort was shown by both teams, who created multiple chances with the opportunities they received. Ultimately, no amount of effort was enough for the visiting team to match the Hawks' performance. So, with less than four minutes remaining, Humber shut the door on their rivals with a final score of 73-39.
Marian Martin earned Player of the Game due to her many contributions in scoring points for her side.
