Capozzolo elevated to head coach of Humber women’s soccer program
ETOBICOKE – Humber athletic director Ray Chateau announced today that Marcelo Capozzolo has been named head coach of the Humber women's soccer program. Capozzolo becomes the fourth head coach in program history after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach with the Hawks.
A familiar and respected presence within the program, he joined the staff under Hall of Fame head coach Mauro Ongaro (1996–2022) and continued in the role under Jose Caro, playing an important part in one of the most successful stretches in recent program history.
"Promoting from within is something we value highly, and Marcelo represents the very best of Humber Athletics," said Chateau. "His long-standing connection to the program as a student-athlete and coach, combined with the success he has helped build here, made him the natural choice to lead our women's soccer program forward."
During his time on staff, the Hawks compiled a 45-18-10 record (.685), earning four conference podium finishes in five seasons, highlighted by the program's first OCAA provincial championship in a decade.
Capozzolo's connection to Humber runs deep. A standout defender for the men's soccer team, he enjoyed a decorated career donning the navy and gold. Across two stints (2004; 2009–13), he helped lead Humber to six provincial championships—three indoor and three outdoor—while capturing a CCAA national title in 2012.
Known for his leadership and relentless competitiveness, Capozzolo earned numerous individual honours, including CCAA All-Canadian recognition, OCAA Player of the Year, Championship MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named Humber's Male Athlete of the Year in 2013 and was later inducted into the Hall of the Fame.
"It is a true honour to be appointed as head coach of the Humber women's soccer team, and I am incredibly excited about what the future holds," said Capozzolo. "I am very grateful to Coach Mo [Ongaro] for the opportunity to join the staff in 2021, and to Coach Jose for bringing me on board, collaborating with me, and trusting me along the way. They established a strong foundation and culture here, and I am committed to building on that while advancing the program.
"Humber is a special place to me; it has shaped the person I am today. It is where I met my wife, formed lifelong friendships, and created lasting memories both on and off the field. This connection makes this opportunity even more meaningful."
In addition to his work with Humber, Capozzolo has been actively involved in player development with Vaughan Soccer Club. He has coached the club's U17 and U18 I-Model teams and currently serves as head coach of both the U21 and Women's OSL squads. He holds a CONCACAF B Diploma.
Capozzolo will be supported by a strong coaching staff for the 2026 season. Assistant Hayley Lewis and goalkeeper coach Daniel Voci will be returning, with the addition of Vanessa Reda (2021-24).
As he transitions into the head coaching role, Capozzolo is focused on building upon the strong foundation already in place.
"We want to build a culture where we are strong, united, and resilient," he added. "It's built on accountability, respect, and a team-first mindset. We want players who compete with heart and are willing to sacrifice for one another. If we get that right, the results will follow."
With a clear vision guiding the program forward, his goals remain firmly set on sustained excellence.
"Our goal is to compete for and win provincial and national championships, while building a consistent, competitive program that represents Humber the right way, both on and off the field."
