ETOBICOKE — Humber men's basketball picked up its first win of the season, defeating the visiting Canadore Panthers (0-6, 11th West), 69-54, Saturday afternoon at the North Campus Gym.
Jaylan Morgan led the way for the Hawks recording his first double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points, 15 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
Humber struggled in the opening quarter, as it was Canadore who looked hungrier to start the game, opening on a 15-4 run. The Panthers forced the Hawks to commit eight turnovers in the frame, while knocking down three treys and led by nine after ten minutes of play, 19-10.
A different Hawks team came out to play the next quarter as they rolled the Panthers in the second going on a 17-0 run. Canadore went one-for-15 (6.7 percent) in the quarter as Humber used its defence to take control of the game. Jaylan Morgan, Kevin Otoo, and Justus Salmon helped spark the offence in the frame, combining for 16 points in the quarter on five-for-seven shooting.
A tightly contested quarter in the third kept the game close as the Hawks went into the final quarter up by eight. Humber would put the game to bed in the fourth, locking up on defence again, holding the Panthers to just 12 points to close out the game, 69-54.
Two other Hawks finished in double figures, as Dequan Cascart picked up 12 points, while Trey Wilson finished with ten.
John Clark, Zach Martyn, and Raivone Young, all finished in double figures for the Panthers, combing for 41 points in a losing effort.
- Canadore shot 20-for-73 (27.4 percent) in the game, the lowest by any Humber opponent this season.
- Jaylon Morgan finished with a Humber career-high 15 rebounds in the game.
- Humber's 69 points were its lowest in a win since beating Sheridan 57-56 in Nov. 2015.
Humber men's basketball (1-4, 10th West) will head back on the road Nov. 14 to face the Niagara Knights (2-3, 7th West). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
