Humber Basketball semifinal showdowns

ETOBICOKE - Humber basketball has both programs in the OCAA Final Four, with the women's squad beginning Feb. 28 and the men's on Mar. 1 at the North Campus Gym.

On the road against the top-ranked team in the country, the Hawks will have their work cut out for them. The Wolves won the OCAA silver medal last season and have won 42 straight games against the East Division. Led by Dasia McDonald, the East Division Player of the Year, Algonquin will have the benefit from playing at home.  

First-year head coach Ceejay Nofuente will be looking to help the Hawks win their 13th provincial title, and is led offensively by OCAA Player of the Year Kia Watt who is averaging 18.5 points-per-game this postseason. Rookie Persia Martin-Brown is nearly averaging a double-double, sitting at 12 points and nine rebounds-per-game.

Top-ranked Humber basketball will be hosting No. Georgian to kickoff the final four this weekend at Humber Polytechnic. The Grizzlies are led by fourth-year head coach Chad Bewley, former Humber assistant coach and 2015 CCAA national champion with the Hawks. Their first team all-star Trey Wilson played his first season with Humber in 2019 when Bewley recruited the Barrie native to the Hawks. Georgian will be looking to win their first OCAA medal in men's basketball this weekend.

Humber has won 16 consecutive games against the Grizzlies, with the last loss coming during the 1972-73 season. With a career 11-1 record in the OCAA postseason, Coach of the Year Omar Miles is looking to finish on the provincial podium for the third time in four seasons. Rookie D.J. Burke is averaging 15.5 points-per-game during the postseason in 34 minutes of action.
