Men’s Rugby Drop Home Opener to Georgian, 26-15

ETOBICOKE – Humber rugby opened the 2019 season at home Friday afternoon, falling to the Georgian Grizzlies, 26-15.

For the first time since 2015, Humber's Valley Field hosted an official OCAA game, and the new look Humber Hawks put the league on notice that the new squad will not be pushed around.

The Georgian Grizzlies, considered by some as the top team in the province this season, tested Humber's defence early but the Hawks would not allow the Grizzlies to pass the try line.

Finally, in the 17th minute, Tennyson Brown streaked down the sideline before passing to Zack Patfield for the corner try. A Ryan Connolly convert from a tough angle gave Georgian a seven-point lead. On the ensuing possession, Georgian scored another try and convert to take a 14-0 lead.

With three minutes remaining in the half, Ehab Ahmed passed to a streaking Juan Manago who cut by two Georgian defenders to record Humber's first try since Oct. 1, 2015. At the break, Humber trailed, 14-5.

Trailing by 16 points with less than 20 minutes remaining, Miguel Gabriel found a streaking Bhupinder Dhanjal who sprinted to the house untouched to trim the Grizzlies lead to 11.

Despite trailing for the entire match, Humber's resilience was on display, fighting through early injuries. Christopher Dominey recorded the final try for the Hawks with less than minutes remaining but ultimately fell to Georgian, 26-15.
