OCAA set to evaluate Lacrosse Sixes for varsity consideration
ETOBICOKE - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) announced the introduction of lacrosse sixes as an exploratory sport for the 2026 season, just ahead of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.
The Humber Hawks will play a key role in shaping the future of the discipline, joining Durham, Fleming, and Mohawk as one of only four institutions selected to participate in this fall’s exhibition season.
Humber to Host Opening Showcase
Humber will immediately take centre stage, hosting the opening showcase on September 27 at Rob Ford Stadium in Etobicoke, marking the first opportunity for fans to see the Hawks compete on home turf in the fast-growing sixes format. Every match will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
The full exhibition schedule includes:
- Sept. 27 – Humber Polytechnic (Rob Ford Stadium, Etobicoke)
- Oct. 18 – Durham College (Oshawa)
- Oct. 25 – Fleming College (Peterborough)
- Nov. 1 – Mohawk College (Hamilton)
Building Momentum After Historic Firsts
Humber has already helped pioneer the sport at the collegiate level. Last season, the Hawks competed in an exhibition schedule and participated in Canada’s first-ever collegiate lacrosse sixes game, facing Mohawk at the Baggataway Cup.
That early adoption reflects Humber’s broader commitment to innovation in varsity athletics and student-athlete opportunity.
A Natural Fit for Humber Athletics
The addition of lacrosse aligns with Humber’s long-standing emphasis on high-performance sport, inclusivity, and community connection.
“Our program is built on providing meaningful opportunities for student-athletes while staying at the forefront of sport development,” said Ray Chateau, Director of Athletics, when the program was first announced. “Lacrosse is deeply rooted in Canadian heritage and is an exciting addition to the Humber Hawks lineup.”
With strong ties to the local lacrosse community—particularly through Mimico Lacrosse—the Hawks are well-positioned to develop a competitive and sustainable pipeline of programs.
Leadership on the Bench
Humber’s lacrosse program is led by Tanner Thomson, a former National Lacrosse League first-round draft pick and NCAA Division I standout. Since joining Humber, Thomson has guided the program through its early stages, including its inaugural exhibition competition phase.
His experience at both the professional and collegiate levels gives the Hawks a strong foundation as the sport continues to evolve within the OCAA.
A Sport with Deep Roots and Global Growth
The OCAA initiative also reflects a broader recognition of lacrosse’s cultural significance. Originating from Indigenous peoples of North America, the sport has long held deep spiritual and community importance.
At the same time, the modern “sixes” format—created in 2018—has accelerated the sport’s global growth. Featuring:
- Six players per side
- A 30-second shot clock
- Four eight-minute quarters
- Fast-paced, 45-minute games
The format is designed to increase accessibility and excitement. Its momentum continues to build following its inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
What This Means for Humber
For Humber Athletics, the exhibition season represents more than just competition—it’s a chance to:
- Showcase the Hawks as leaders in emerging varsity sports
- Strengthen recruitment and local community engagement
- Help shape the future of lacrosse within the OCAA
Following the fall schedule, the OCAA will evaluate the pilot's success at its December meetings, with the potential to elevate lacrosse sixes to full varsity status.
