FORT McMURRAY, AB: As the Humber Hawks men's soccer team prepares to compete for their sixth national championship, the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) committee has named Hawks forward Marcos Nunes (Brampton) the 2016 Men's Soccer National Player of the Year.
The coveted award was presented to Nunes at the annual CCAA All-Canadian Banquet in Fort McMurray, AB., as part of the 2016 Men's Soccer National Championship. Nunes becomes the third Humber student-athlete to be named the CCAA player of the year, joining hall of famers Luigi Della Rovere (1997) and Andrew DaSilva (2009).
After scoring ten goals in nine games this season, Nunes became the first Hawk to lead the conference in scoring since Michael Aigbokie (Mississauga) did it back in 2006. His torrid scoring pace continued throughout the OCAA playoffs, as his four goals in three games helped the Hawks tie Algonquin for the most provincial championships.
Nunes has now moved into a tie with Phil Caporrella (1993-95) for eighth all-time in scoring, with 14 career goals in regular season play.
In six career CCAA games, the Hawks have never lost with Nunes in the lineup, as the star striker averages one goal-per-game on the national stage.
Nunes and the rest of the Hawks will now attempt to win their fourth national championship in five seasons. In their quarter-final matchup, Humber will be playing the SAIT Trojans (ACAC) Wednesday morning at 10:00am MT (12:00pm ET). Click here to watch live.
