To play varsity sports at any age is a great accomplishment for any athlete, one that can be remembered and cherished long after your playing career is finished. It’s the accumulation of hard work and dedication that for many started as young as they could walk or talk, and by achieving it, we as student athletes put an extra emphasis on dedication on ourselves, knowing now that we are expected to perform well both on the field of play and in the classroom, as well as our jobs for those of us still working. Yet we knowingly embark on these journeys in hopes of becoming better people for it, and hopefully creating new memories, learning new lessons, and gaining new friendships that can last us our lifetimes.
But to be remembered by those who gave us our chance, the ones who saw our potential and gave us an opportunity to compete wearing their colors, can possibly be the greatest honor a varsity athlete can receive. It can be a vindication of a lifetime of dedication for some, and is the ultimate statement that can be made by any institution by saying “we value your contributions so much, that it will never be forgotten”.
